This whisky was distilled in 1979 by Dallas Dhu after 24 years maturing in oak casks. Bottled by First Cask who selected the cask for release under their own label. 46% is thought by many to be a good ABV for experiencing the 'mouth feel' and full flavour of whisky.

Old Malt Cask from Douglas Laing means golden drinking strength, i.e. 50%. Rumour has it that the Laing brothers are splitting the company, but I am trying a Dallas Dhu from the good old days. It is a distillate from before I was born, that matured for 31 long years on a sherry cask. My oldest Dallas Dhu so far. The nose offers nice fruity tones....

from a purchased sample Nose: Along the lines of the 1981, though perhaps a touch more minerally. Spun cotton candy, sweet glue, and a little more floral. Maybe less complex, though far greater balance and control of the sweetness. Of course, candied and sweet barley, lemon zest, a single quince. Fresh apricots, too, and caster sugar frosting....

from a purchased sample Nose: Vanilla, cake frosting, sweet flower wax. Oodles of sweet barley. This thing is going to melt teeth. Acidic apple, touches of glue, and sweet lemon zest. Musty peach and tangerine/apricot. Something even of a precocious Barsac. Anise/licorice (barely). Perhaps even some spun sugar. Nuts/almondy. (with water) More...
