Nikka Yoichi Whisky

Yoichi is one of the most important names in Japanese whisky, produced at Nikka's first distillery on the coast of Hokkaido. Established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, it was conceived in a setting chosen for its resemblance to Scotland, and it remains closely associated with a more muscular, traditional style than many drinkers expect from Japanese whisky.

The distillery is particularly known for peated malt and for its rare use of direct coal-fired distillation, a method that helps give the whisky its weight, texture and slightly oily, smoky depth. The result is a single malt with a solid structure and a character that often combines peat, salinity, orchard fruit and flavourful richness in a way that feels both distinctly Japanese and quietly rooted in Scotch tradition.

Yoichi sits at the centre of Nikka's story, not only as a single malt in its own right but also as a key component in the house's broader blends. Its current range is centred on the core Single Malt Yoichi, with age-stated and limited editions appearing more selectively, reinforcing its reputation as one of Japan's most distinctive and sought-after distillery bottlings.
